Leah JohnsonBY DESIGN
Certified Workday Learning Consultant

Your learning system should run by design, not by accident.

Your implementation partner went live and moved on. I help your team run Workday Learning the way it was meant to run: clean configuration, clear ownership, and programs that reach the right people at the right time. Available for fractional and project-based work.

Where I come in

I work after go-live, when your team owns the system and the real work starts. I don’t lead Workday implementations. I make them pay off. Strategy when you need a plan, hands on the keyboard when you need it built.

Workday Learning optimization

A tenant that has grown one request at a time since go-live rarely adds up to a system. I untangle it.

  • Configuration review and cleanup
  • Learning programs, campaigns and enrollment rules
  • Region- and role-based assignments

Learning system governance

Standards, owners and decision rights, so the system stays clean after the cleanup.

  • Ownership and intake models
  • Naming, content and security standards
  • Change control that people will follow

Learning operations

The day-to-day engine behind every program: admin processes, testing, deployment and reporting.

  • Admin playbooks and runbooks
  • Testing and release planning
  • Operational reporting

Enablement and change

A great configuration nobody understands is a support ticket waiting to happen.

  • Admin and partner enablement
  • Talent Development partnership
  • Rollout and adoption planning
Beyond Workday

Smaller team? Different LMS? Same discipline.

Workday Learning is my specialty, but good structure isn't only for large enterprises. I also take on select projects with smaller and mission-driven organizations: physician practices, health equity nonprofits and community programs. If you have a curriculum and need to get it to your staff, volunteers or community health workers, I'll help you choose and set up a platform that works without a full-time admin.

  • Choosing an LMSThe right platform for your size, budget and people, not the one with the best sales demo.
  • Setting it up rightCourses, enrollments, certificates and completion reports for funders, set up cleanly from day one.
  • Governance you can keep upSimple rules and owners that fit a small team.
  • Handoff and trainingYour staff runs it confidently after I'm gone.
The difference

Wild West, or by design?

If the left column sounds familiar, you're in good company. Most learning systems get there. Few have to stay there.

CatalogFive versions of the same course, three of them retiredOne source of truth with a retirement process
SecurityBroad admin access because it was fasterRole-based access, documented and audited

Work with me

Three ways to engage

Every engagement starts with a short conversation about what's broken, what's at stake and what "done" looks like.

2 to 4 weeks

Learning system assessment

A structured review of your Workday Learning setup, governance and operations, with a prioritized roadmap you can act on.

Best for: teams that know something's off and need a clear picture first.

Defined scope

Project engagement

A specific outcome with a start and an end: a governance model, a campaign redesign, a cleanup or a new program build.

Best for: a known problem that needs an expert to own it.

Ongoing, part-time

Fractional support

Senior Workday Learning expertise a few days a month, without the cost of a full-time hire.

Best for: lean teams, leadership gaps or a busy season.

About

Hi, I'm Leah.

I've worked in Learning since 1997 and in learning technology since 2008. I'm Workday Learning certified and today I'm the functional lead for Learning at a Fortune 500 global retailer. I own the system side of Workday Learning: configuration, security, testing, deployment and administration. I also partner with Talent Development teams to turn their learning initiatives into programs that work.

Good learning programs deserve a system that doesn't get in their way.

I started By Design to bring that experience to more organizations. I'm direct, I like structure, and I'll tell you what I see. You'll get a clear recommendation and the plan to carry it out.

I'm based in Brooklyn and work with clients remotely.
